Be More Dog

Be More Dog (1 minute)

As I watched the video, I couldn't help but think of how my dog, Columbo, approaches every car ride. Each time he has the opportunity to get in the car he leaps in with boundless energy and has a look on his face like he's king of the world! Although many of his car rides bring him to the park or to Petco, some of them bring him to the vet clinic and most recently for a minor surgery. So some trips are exciting and some are not very pleasurable and he never knows where we are heading to. The interesting thing to me is that EVERY time he gets in the car he is excited about the possibilities of where he might go. He is fearless, he is optimistic, he just loves the ride and is excited for any destination that may come his way.

As educators, we could learn from Columbo's road trips. Every day in school we face the unknown. We may encounter an angry parent, a failed lesson, or a number of disappointments. However, we may also gain new partners, facilitate a life changing lesson, and help students become triumphant. If you walk into school each day with the same attitude as Columbo climbs into the car, who knows what great things will happen?

Let's take the opportunity to "be more dog" and approach each day at school like a road trip of adventure! Yes, we will face some challenges and obstacles and some days will be better than others. However, each day can be an adventure if we look at things through a positive lens. Enjoy the ride and embrace the fact that we can make a positive difference in the life of a child. Make those dog days great!

No, he's not sad, this is Columbo's happy look:)
