Three Magic Words

When I think of the most powerful words someone can say to another, I usually think of "I love you". But there are many other phrases that are powerful as well. "I forgive you", "Let me help", and the words that I want to focus on today, "I appreciate you!". Love inspires us, forgiveness frees us, service makes us better, but appreciation is often what keeps us going strong! Education is one of those professions that doesn't allow us to see the fruits of our labors until many years later. It may take the form of a college graduate coming back to thank a teacher. It may be reading about a former student in the newspaper for a service project. It may simply be knowing they had a happy life and that you contributed to them reaching their dreams.

Because of the delayed gratification of the world of education, this week has a very special significance for many teachers. For some, it may be the only time they hear from a child or a family that they are making a difference and hear those magic words, "I appreciate you." I've heard arguments over the years that we don't need things like Teacher Appreciate Day, because it may give the impression that teachers are only appreciated one day or week a year. While I do agree with the thought that teachers should be appreciated and shown the proper respect all year long, I think teachers still deserve a special day and week where everyone at the same time says a collective "Thank You" to teachers across the country.

So on this teacher appreciation week, I want to say those magic words to the teachers in my building, the teachers I have worked with in the past, and to ALL educators wherever they may be and whatever title they may hold..."You ARE appreciated!".

Teaching IS a Superpower!

  1. Jon,

I love how you talked about delayed gratification. This is very true in our profession and can often lead to frustration for educators. But, kind words go a long way to show appreciation. I also love the graphic and video you added.
